Councillor René Kinzett

Born in Ashford, Middlesex in 1975, René first moved to Swansea since 1994 and is the Group Leader of the Welsh Conservatives on Swansea Council. He represents the Mayals ward, which includes one of the finest botanic gardens in Wales at Clyne.

René lives locally in Sketty, and is involved with many charitable and voluntary projects, including organising a fundraising Walk for Life for Wales Kidney Foundation and providing public relations support for the restoration of one of Wales' oldest surviving music halls.

René is an experiences public relations and government affairs consultant and has worked for organisations in the criminal justice, higher education and consumer affairs fields. Whilst working at the National HQ of Victim Support, René worked with the Home Office and the Probation Service to champion the interests of victims and witnesses of crime.

Rene has also worked for energywatch, the consumer council for gas and electricity customers, where he worked on a project to prevent the elderly and disabled from being cut off from their energy supplies if they fell behind with paying their bills.

René's Experience
René was first elected to public office at the age of 22 when he won a bye-election for the West Cross ward of Swansea Council in 1997.

He has held various positions on Swansea Council, including Chairman of the Planning Committee, Chairman of the Performance Scrutiny Board and Chairman of the Cabinet Advisory Committee for Finance. René is also Leader of the Welsh Conservative Group on Swansea Council.

René joined the Conservatives in June 2006 after having been a member of the Liberal Democrats for many years. He decided to join the Conservatives after being impressed by David Cameron's success in transforming the Party into a modern, liberal and compassionate Conservative Party.

René is committed to reforms to bring about real social justice in Britain and firmly believes that the Conservatives hold the key policies to helping the less well off and promoting social mobility and choice for all, regardless of income.

Campaigns

Swansea West Conservatives have led the campaign to protect the precious green spaces in our urban landscape and have helped local resident groups to get a number of important green areas designated as “village greens” to help preserve them for future generations. The Liberal Democrat-led Swansea Council tried to build new houses on these sites.

Local Conservatives have also been active in promoting local Post Offices and have also stopped the Council from digging up the seafront Promenade and turning it into a bus lane for the “bendy bus” scheme.

Swansea Conservatives want to see better value to money in local services and have challenged the local Council to keep Council Tax rises down to a minimum level and local Conservative Councillors have identified millions of pounds of potential savings that the Council could make to help protect local taxpayers from unnecessary tax hikes.
